Farmers can harvest hay on state land
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin farmers dealing with the effects of a prolonged drought will be allowed to harvest hay and graze cattle on more than 11,000 acres of state-owned land.
The special harvest will end Aug. 10 for prairie grasses and Aug. 30 for cool season grasses. Farmers are asked to sign an agreement that they will be using the hay for their livestock and not to sell it.
The state says the acreage includes about 160 wildlife areas, parks, recreation areas, southern forests and natural areas. A list of the acreage by county is available on the Department of Natural Resources website at http://dnr.wi.gov.
