Father thankful Mequon son survived massacre at Colorado movie theater

AURORA, CO - It's been quite a month for Carey Rottman.
The 27-year-old Mequon native was married just three weeks ago. Three days ago he and a friend were among those shot during the movie theater massacre.
As shooting suspect James Holmes made his initial court appearance Monday, Carey and his family watched from his hospital room.
TODAY'S TMJ4 reporter Shelley Walcott spoke to his father Dale by phone, and asked how it felt to watch the shooting suspect in court.
"I see this guy on TV and it's hard to believe this guy just shot my son. It just all seems just totally unreal," Dale Rottman said. "You never think it's going to happen to you and when it does it's devastating."
Carey is preparing for a second round of surgery Tuesday. He was shot in the thigh, and is facing a year's worth of rehab. Dale Rottman says his son didn't say much as he watched his alleged shooter in court.
"He's not really expressing any opinion. He's watching but I don't think he's angry."
He says they are all just grateful his son is alive.
"I think he just feels so fortunate that he was one of the lucky ones. That he's still around."
