Department of Natural Resources Board approves wolf hunt framework
STEVENS POINT- The state Department of Natural Resources' board has approved the framework for Wisconsin's new wolf hunt.
The Natural Resources Board, which sets DNR policy, approved the rules unanimously Tuesday in Stevens Point. The regulations establish a kill quota of 201 wolves and limit permits to 2,010.
Gov. Scott Walker signed a bill earlier this year establishing a wolf hunt from Oct. 15 through February. The legislation left details such as kill quotas and number of permits to the DNR.
The DNR estimates as many as 880 wolves may roam the state. Critics contend the kill quota is too low to help farmers struggling with wolves killing their livestock, but DNR officials say they want to move cautiously in the hunt's first year.
