Waukesha County mother crushed by 600-pound branch out of hospital
OCONOMOWOC LAKE- A 600-pound tree branch came crashing down on a Waukesha County mother leaving her paralyzed.
Just out of the hospital, Laura Dwyer is talking about the tragedy and her future for the first time with TODAY'S TMJ4's Charles Benson.
Dwyer is so happy to be back home with her two boys and husband after six weeks in the hospital.
"All I think about is it happened for a reason and there's a purpose and we don't know why," said Dwyer. "It's something we will have to figure out as we go."
Dwyer's love for landscape work developed while growing up on the Rasmussen farm in Hartland.
The odds of what happened to her on May 29 while working in Oconomowoc Lake on a windy day are just astronomical.
"I never saw it," said Dwyer. "I heard it but never in my life would I think it's coming right there."
The huge branch fell right on top of her, severing her spine and bringing down a power line right near her.
There are many days she asks: "Why me?"
"But then I think, all the friends and family, they say, and everyone on Facebook says: 'Oh Laura, if anyone can beat this it's you.'"
Laura Dwyer has many reasons to beat the odds. Two are named Thomas and Crandon.
"Lots of hugs every morning, hug mom," Laura says to her boys, "hug mom and every night, right?"
This weekend there are a number of benefits including a Zumba marathon to help the family with medicals bills and home remodeling to help Laura get around the house.
