MILWAUKEE - The sluggish economy means finding jobs can be a struggle for almost anyone. That includes military members who have already served their country.
TODAY'S TMJ4 is partnering with local and national organizations to help veterans find jobs this week.
"Hiring Our Heroes" will offer veterans, current military members, and their spouses a chance to attend a special job fair.
It has been scheduled for next Thursday at the War Memorial in Milwaukee.
The event is free and open to military or veterans' spouses.
"It involves a strong partnership with local work force agencies," said Shaun Carter, who has helped organize the Milwaukee event.
"Hiring Our Heroes has connected more than 10,000 veterans ot jobs since we started in March 2011."
Carter says he's experienced the hardship of returning home from military service without a job, and the struggle to find it.
"Personally speaking, as a military veteran..I can tell you there's nothing more disheartening than coming home to a community that doesn't have jobs available for people who really deserve it," said Carter.
"I thin it's an issue that crosses both the civilian and veteran job lines. It's a pervasive issue. I think it's the most prevalent issue, so we need to make sure to connect veterans out there to jobs, to legitimate employment."
He also touted what veterans can give to a company.
"Exposure to diversity, all employers look for that. Organizational skills, management skills, working under pressure, training under stress."
Carter said his organization hopes to have about 400 job fairs throughout America.
