Rusty handgun may hold historic significance
PESHTIGO, Wis. - Residents have turned over a rusted gun that could have historic significance to the small town.
city officials wonder whether it's the same 22-calibur handgun used in a well known bank robbery some 50 years ago.
Two armed robbers stole $1,000 from the Peshtigo National Bank in 1956.
The weapon used was never found.
This gun, discovered in the sediment of the Peshtigo River last week, became exposed during work on a dam.
Mayor Al Krizenesky believes a serial number will determine whether it is or is not the same gun.
If it is, officials plan to put it on display at the city's historical museum.
