Extreme heat causing buckling roads in southeast Wisconsin

MILWAUKEE- There's another danger due to the heat that could pop up at any time -- buckling roads.
There have been dozens of reports of buckled roads across the state. And with an Excessive Heat Warning until Friday at 10 p.m., we may not have seen the end of it.
Shannon Haydin is a Mequon native, and hasn't seen anything like this summer in a long time.
"That is crazy. You wouldn't think that the heat would cause something like that to happen," said Haydin. "Another ballgame, definitely."
And the heat is bearing down on roads across the state. One bright spot? All this dry weather that's killing our grass, is actually keeping the roads from being even worse.
"Concrete expands, it's worse with rain where you actually get some steam that blows up the joint area," said Bob Gutierrez of the Wisconsin DOT.
DOT crews are monitoring the conditions with more than 100 cameras on the freeways in southeastern Wisconsin. Thomas Johnson has lived here all his life and has seen his share of weather-related road problems.
"In the heat, it's the same thing with the cold, you know you're going to end up with a lot of issues that are tough for people to deal with," said Johnson.
"I stay home!!"
For everyone who can't stay inside, DOT crews suggest using the 511 system for the very latest on road weather conditions.
