Scams target Wisconsin residents through snail mail

MADISON, wis. - In Wisconsin, scam artists are using the U.S. mail to get their message out.

One is described as the secret shopper scam, where the public rates the service of certain retailers, and then gets paid for their time.

Problem is, the Department of Financial Institutions says payout is with a counterfeit check and once it's cashed, you're responsible for repaying the bank.

In another scam noted in Wisconsin over the past several months, victims are told they've won a foreign lottery.

A check instructs victims to deposit the money and pay taxes and fees with cash.
