BROOKFIELD- A dozen towns around southeast Wisconsin have put burn bans into place. For many people that means restrictions on summer fun.
Brookfield is on that list and that could put its July 4th celebration in jeopardy. For now, it's still on, but other restrictions are in place.
Brookfield resident Brian Pederson is right on when it comes to the dangerously dry conditions in Waukesha County.
"It's pretty bad right now. It's just a tinder box I guess."
The Brookfield Fire Department is banning all out door fires -- except for cooking with a grill and the use of all fireworks which is already prohibited in the city.
"We not only put out fires now in the fire department," said Brookfield Deputy Chief Brian Gerner, "but we are trying to prevent them and keep people safe."
The DNR rates the fire danger at very high in all southeastern counties, one level below extreme.
The Fond du Lac Fire Department showed TODAY'S TMJ4 just how quickly a fire can spread when a sparkler hits dry grass. Add a little wind and look out.
"The breeze is actually working against us," said Gerner. "It's drying things out. It's still close to 80 or 90 degrees but things are drying out quickly."
For now, Brian Pederson will enjoy watching his son play baseball and hope for rain.
"You have to be real careful with any kind of fire or any kind of spark."
Brookfield police will be on the look out for violators.
