Fond du Lac, other areas consider canceling fireworks due to fire risk

FOND DU LAC - Extreme heat will stick around for at least a couple days in Southeastern Wisconsin.
After weeks of little or no rain in parts of our area, Fourth of July celebrations could look very different with the possibility of canceled or postponed fireworks.
Several communities are under a burning ban, and some fireworks displays could be threatened due to a fire risk.
"We just dropped a sparkler into this dry grass, see how quickly it spreads?" uttered Fond du Lac Police Chief Peter O'Leary, who showed TODAY'S TMJ4 the fire danger by using a small sparkler to ignite a grass fire.
Fond du Lac is considering postponing or canceling its fireworks show, because of the dry conditions.
"We don't want to do that," said O'Leary.
"We are already working on a contingency plan to have extra personnel, extra grass fire vehicles on site so we can have safe fireworks."
"4th of July is one of the things we come here for," said Oscar Martinez, who drove with his family from Texas to Fond du Lac for those fireworks.
"Every year I've been here it gets better and better. Hopefully this year, if they do it, it gets even better."
Fireworks shows along the lakefront will still take place.
