Dry weather bring fireworks dangers, cancellation of some July 4th events
MILWAUKEE - A published report says that officials in Fond du Lac and the Madison area may choose to delay or cancel the July 4th fireworks in that city because of dry and hot weather conditions.
According to the Fond du Lac Reporter, such weather conditions could even lead to a burn ban in the area.
“It wouldn’t take much — a sparkler or a smoldering firework — and it would start a grass fire," said Fond du Lac Fire Chief Peter O'Leary.
The annual fireworks display happens there at Lakeside Park.
Additionally, WTMJ partner station WIBA Radio in Madison says officials in Prairie du Sac have canceled fireworks there.
Such moves are bringing reminders to people as well that conducting their own fireworks could bring about the same fire dangers, because of the dry and windy conditions.
"It makes a bad combination," DNR wildfire specialist Catherine Koele told Newsraido 620 WTMJ's Jodi Becker.
She said that people have to bring caution to anything that brings a spark, and not just fireworks.
"(Sparklers) are probably the number one cause of fire, when it comes to fireworks. They're very popular, and with the dry conditions...one spark from those sparklers can cause a fire."
Koele also explained that care must be taken with burn pits and grills.
