MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee's Coggs Center is set to open back up for business Monday.
The Coggs Center has been shut down since last Wednesday, though fire investigators still haven't determined a cause for that fire-alarm fire nearby at 12th and Vliet. The smell of smoke still lingers at the intersection.
After five days of clean-up, inspectors say the building is now safe to re-open.
Crews specializing in fire restoration spent days cleaning carpets and ceilings.
"No tax dollars will go to the repair and cleanup," County Executive Chris Abele says.
Soot and smoke settled inside after a five-alarm fire leveled a building across the street last week.
"You could smell smoke, but there wasn't any billowing inside the Coggs building, no," Hunger Task Force Executive Director Sherri Tussler says.
Tussler was inside the Coggs Center when the fire happened.
The state's Food Share program, BadgerCare and other social services, including a food pantry, are also inside. People who rely on those services were re-routed to different locations. Tussler knew the closure would have an impact.
"People are scheduled for review interviews so if they don't conduct their review interview, their case is subject to closure, so they need to get a hold of their worker," Tussler said last Wednesday.
The county expects insurance to cover the repair costs.
