Elderly man shot by SWAT team identified
HURLEY, Wis. (AP) -- The police chief in the small northern Wisconsin town of Hurley has released the name of an 85-year-old man fatally shot by a SWAT team in his apartment.
Killed in the Friday morning incident was Leo J. Driscoll of Hurley. Police Chief Dan Erspamer says Saturday that the shooting is under investigation by the sheriff's department in nearby Vilas County and that he can't release details the circumstances of the shooting. He says Driscoll had no record with local police.
Erspamer says Driscoll threatened his apartment manager with a handgun, and then retreated to his apartment. He says Driscoll's girlfriend warned police he had multiple firearms.
Driscoll says two of his officers and several others on the multijurisdictional SWAT team are on administrative leave while the incident is investigated.
