Local law enforcement monitoring boaters during 'Operation Dry Watch'
MILWAUKEE- A warning for boaters this weekend: Law enforcement will be watching closely.
The goal is to increase safety by taking drunk boaters out of the water.
It's called 'Operation Dry Water.'
While the name may be confusing, law enforcement officers will be out in Pewaukee this weekend to make it very clear that drinking and boating will not be tolerated.
It's always fun to hit the water in the midst of a beautiful Wisconsin summer. Places like Pewaukee Lake will be packed. The rise in popularity also means the potential for danger, especially if people driving boats around have too much in their tanks.
That's where wardens like Kyle Drake come in -- launching a three-day crackdown set on catching intoxicated boaters. They stopped nearly 1,800 of them last year.
"One of our biggest factors in covering accidents and fatalities is people consuming alcohol and getting into dangerous situations," said Kyle Drake of the DNR.
It's not just here in our area. Law enforcement officers will be out across the country, stopping problem boaters and trying to make your weekend a little safer.
Of course, officers need your help to cut down on danger. They told TODAY'S TMJ4 the summer sun and alcohol has a greater impact on your system. They're asking boaters to have fun, but use common sense.
