MILWAUKEE- As temperatures are rising across the area, so are peoples tempers, says one licensed clinical counselor.

Counselor Kate Ferguson said people, for the most part, realize they are cranky when it gets warmer, but still need to be conscious of their behavior towards others.

"It's amazing what hot weather can do to your mood and can do to your whole mental psyche," said Ferguson to Newsradio 620 WTMJ.  "Everyone's moods are running on high alert right now."

She said heat can curb your mood and she recommends that you recognize you are hot and to cut yourself and others some slack.  According to Ferguson.  "I think when you cut other people slack, you won't take what they're saying to you so hard."

Her other recommendations include drinking plenty of water, exercising early in the morning or late at night.  Also, she said if you can't do either -- go to a place with air conditioning around lunch time to stay cool and walk for about 15 minutes to release some endorphins.

And, for fun, she said treating yourself to some ice cream isn't a bad idea either.
