Search for pit bull after attack on Milwaukee man
MILWAUKEE - A father is attacked by a pit bull on Father's Day weekend.
The 55-year-old victim from Milwaukee is now in the hospital with serious injuries. Police say he was walking his dog with his wife when the attack happened Saturday night near 42nd and Capitol.
Police tell us the pit bull jumped from a second-floor balcony, first attacking the couple's dog.
When the man tried to get the pit bull off his dog, it started to maul him.
"The dog really attacked him everywhere," says the victim's step-daughter, Zipporah Wood. "His ear, his underarm. We just thank god it wasn't his neck, you know. We just thank god he's still alive."
Wood says the couple walks through the route often, but this time, the pit bull went crazy.
"The man's wife, someone had thrown her a shovel and she was hitting the dog with the shovel he still wouldn't let go," an eyewitness told TODAY'S TMJ4.
Witnesses say the pit bull finally let go of the man when someone pinned it with their car. Milwaukee Police officers then shot the dog twice.
"I've never seen him get vicious toward anyone before," neighbor Jerome Avery says.
Zipporah's family feels it was only a matter of time before the pit bull jumped from the balcony.
She's also got a message for the dog's owner.
"I just want to say to everyone, if you're not going to take proper responsibility for an animal. please don't get [a pit bull]."
