Wisconsin couple deported after sentence for enslavement
BROOKFIELD- A husband and wife from southeastern Wisconsin have been deported to their native Philippines after completing six-year federal sentences for human trafficking.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced the deportations Friday of 67-year-old Jefferson Calimlim Sr. and his 66-year-old wife, Elnora.
The Calimlims were doctors living in the Milwaukee suburb of Brookfield. They were convicted in 2006 of bringing a 19-year-old woman from the Philippines and forcing her to work in their home under threat of violence.
Defense attorneys argued that the woman had agreed to the working conditions. They said she knew her situation here was better than the one she faced back home.
The victim says the couple forced her to work from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day, 365 days a year, for 19 straight years.
