MU analyst: Only 'major mistake by Walker' could make election close
MILWAUKEE - A political science professor from Marquette University believes that, if polls like his own university's survey are correct, Wisconsin's incumbent governor should have little trouble retaining his job in Tuesday's recall election.
"It really looks like at this point, only a major mistake on (Republican Governor Scott) Walker's part could make this a highly competitive election again," claimed Professor John McAdams on Newsradio 620 WTMJ's "Wisconsin's Morning News."
"When you are ahead, and all the independent polls show Walker ahead by mid to maybe leaning high-single digits, you adopt a conservative strategy. You want to avoid a gaffe. You want to avoid a major mistake."
The most recent Marquette University Law School poll, released Wednesday, gave Walker a 52 percent to 45 percent lead on Democratic challenger and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett.
McAdams also claims that a problem Barrett has faced is lack of national support from his own Democratic party.
"There is a fair amount of evidence, including a fair amount of complaining from labor people and Barrett people, that the national Democrats appear to be distancing themselves from this election just a bit," explained McAdams.
"It really does look like they think this is a lost cause."
