Suspect pleads no contest in hit-and-run of Milwaukee police officer

MILWAUKEE- A 20-year-old accused of severely injuring a Milwaukee police officer in a hit-and-run has pleaded no contest, according to online court records.

Juan Alvarado is charged with first-degree reckless injury and first-degree recklessly endangering safety.

Alvarado is accused of driving on the wrong side of the street, jumping a curb and striking 37-year-old Officer Frank Vrtochnick as he stood outside his squad car Christmas Day on Milwaukee's south side.

He then allegedly fled and was arrested later at a Chicago bus station in a bathroom, where he was allegedly trying to go to Mexico.

He will be sentenced on June 29.
