Portage County sends postcards for some warrants
STEVENS POINT, Wis. (AP) -- The Portage County Sheriff's Department is trying something new to track down people with outstanding warrants.
Deputies are sending postcards, telling people they're on the department's list.
Chief Deputy Daniel Kontos says there are more than 1,100 outstanding warrants in the county.
The department started sending the postcards two weeks ago. One man has already come in who has owed money for 10 years but didn't realize it.
Kontos tells WAOW-TV (http://bit.ly/JESequ ) the department doesn't have the manpower to look for every person and this is a cost-effective way to track down people.
The names are also listed on the sheriff's department website.
