SS Badger trips canceled Friday
MANITOWOC, Wis. (AP) -- The S.S. Badger car ferry remains grounded on Wisconsin's Lake Michigan shoreline Friday.
The ferry ran into some trouble Thursday at it approached the harbor in Manitowoc after leaving its home port in Ludington, Mich., on its first trip of the season.
The boat ran into a sediment sandbar. A piston ring broke on one of the ferryboat's engines, making it nearly impossible for the Badger to navigate to its moorings.
It took about two hours for a tugboat captain from Sturgeon bay to arrive in Manitowoc and guide the ferryboat to the docks.
For 300 passengers, a four-hour trip across Lake Michigan turned into a seven-hour tour.
The boat's operators tell WLUK-TV (http://bit.ly/JPTGWh ) all trips are canceled Friday and the Badger will stay in Manitowoc until engine repairs are made.
