Firefighters battle big blaze at New Berlin apartment building
RACINE - It didn't take long for fire to comsume a building at the Wyndridge Apartments in New Berlin.
Tony Gadowski had just arrived home and noticed smoke. He thought someone was grilling, then he realized the building was on fire.
"I started kicking down the door to the unit where the smoke was coming from but I couldn't get it kicked in," Gadowski says.
Kristen Scherbarth was feeding her son in a neighboring building when the fire alarm went off.
She was horrified when she ran outside.
"The roof was on fire, the flames, smoke," Scherbarth says. "You couldn't even see the courtyard, it was so dark. It was pitch black."
New Berlin Fire Department Chief Lloyd Bertram was one of the first on the scene.
"When we arrived, we did find a good portion of the roof burning on the apartment," Bertram says.
Bertram says the flames spread quickly. No one was hurt, but at least four apartment units were significantly damaged.
"There's going to be a lot of people looking for someplace to stay tonight," Bertram says.
