MILWAUKEE- A suspect wanted on a federal warrant has been shot and hospitalized after revealing a weapon to U.S. marshals on Milwaukee south side Wednesday afternoon.
Witnesses told TODAY'S TMJ4 they heard eight or nine shots near W. Forest Home Ave. and W. Lincoln Ave. That intersection has been blocked off.
According to US Marshal Kevin A. Carr, a US marshal for the eastern district of Wisconsin, the suspect, Mario A. Lopez was wanted on a federal warrant for failure to comply with supervised released conditions. After locating the suspect, Carr told reporters at a news conference that the man got in a vehicle and tried to flee.
After driving for a short period of time, the suspect left the car and US marshals pursued. Then the suspect showed a weapon and then US marshals fired shots at the suspect.
He was struck, taken to a local hospital and is still alive.
Carr told reporters that none of the US marshals were injured and the suspect has a history of weapon violations and gang associations.
Juan Cuevaz, is distraught over the shooting. "This is not justice, this is not fair," said Cuevaz. "If he was wanted, why didn't (authorities) schedule (an arrest) when he was sleeping, instead of chasing him around, jeopardizing the lives of other people."
Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm told reporters that Milwaukee police has the primary investigation in this shooting and he will release more details when they become available.
