MILWAUKEE- Milwaukee police officer Frank T. Vrtochnick has been awarded a Purple Star Award during Tuesday night's Police/Citizen Merit Awards Ceremony.

The District 2 officer was patrolling the 1800 block of W. Windlake Avenue on Sunday, December 25 2011 when a vehicle drove on the wrong side of the road towards Vrtochnick and his partner.  Vrtochnick was struck by the car and thrown 30 feet.

He spent nearly a month at a hospital and faces extensive rehabilitation and the possibility of life-long disabilities from the accident.

TODAY'S TMJ4 reports that Vrtochnick appeared in good spirits Tuesday night at the awards ceremony, but is still recovering from the accident.

According to Milwaukee police's website, The Source, "We are proud to call him a Milwaukee Police Officer and we continue to pray for his recovery."
