Milwaukee Sheriff's sergeant resigns amid child pornography investigation
MILWAUKEE - Phillip R. Wenztel, the former Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department spokesman charged with producing child pornography, resigned from the Department Monday.
"Effective May 7, 2012, Deputy Sheriff Sergeant Philip Wentzel has resigned from the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office," Milwaukee County Sheriff's Captain Scott Stiff said in a news release.
Wentzel, 44, was arrested and charged in federal court last week with producing child pornography.
According to a criminal complaint, Wentzel took pictures of "sleeping or drugged" prepubescent girls at a campground in Fond du Lac County and then attempted to trade those pictures on the internet.
If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in federal prison and $250,000 in fines.
