Two hospitalized in high speed chase may have been involved in prior burglary
WEST BEND - Two men were hospitalized after leading police on a high speed chase that started in Washington County and ended with a crash near Highway 41 and Highway 28.
According to the Washington County sheriff's office, they were able to locate evidence inside the suspect's vehicle that linked them to a possible burglary the two suspects may have been involved in prior to the chase.
The two men were in a Buick LeSabre that pulled up to a home in town of West and asked a person for directions. The homeowner noticed the driver leave in the opposite way of the directions, then called police.
Police pulled the car over for a traffic stop on Highway 41 around 1:30 p.m. Then the driver suddenly took off, leading police on a chase with reported speeds over 100 mph that lasted approximately five minutes until the car tried to turn off on Highway 28, but missed the on-ramp, hit the embankment and flew into a farm field.
Cam Kurer says he was a moment away from a horrible accident with the high speed chase. "Had we been on the on-ramp 15 seconds earlier, they would have clipped our car off, on the road," said Kurer. "As it came across the grass here on the off-ramp, it hit a rise in the road. As it hit that rise, it went airborne."
The driver, who wasn't wearing a seat belt, was taken to a local hospital; the passenger was taken to Froedtert Hospital by Flight For Life. Authorities say the 20-year-old driver of the crash remains hospitalized, with non-life threatening injuries; the-35-year old passenger was treated and released to authorities.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
