Mandatory high school voter registration offerings to be barred
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A requirement in state law that voter registration be offered to students in high school would be removed under a bill before the state Assembly.
The measure passed on a party line vote in the Senate last month with all Republicans in support and all Democrats opposed. The Republican-controlled Assembly was to take it up Tuesday after delaying a vote last week.
Democrats argued the bill is an assault on voting rights and part of a broader Republican agenda to suppress voting among people who are more likely to support Democrats.
But Republicans say high school students have many other options for registering and it's a burden for elections officials to offer it at the schools.
