MILWAUKEE - The City of Milwaukee has taken the next step in approving a settlement agreement Tuesday involving an assault case connected to the city's Police Department.

The full Common Council approved a $2 million settlement previously agreed to by a council committee.

Several off-duty officers beat Frank Jude, Jr. at a party in Bay View in 2004.

"The Frank Jude case marked a dark chapter in our city’s recent history, and cast a dark cloud over our police department," Common Council President Willie Hines, Jr. said in a statement.  "I believe we still have a good amount of work ahead to improve those MPD-community connections, and I credit Chief Flynn for taking appropriate actions to identify troubled officers sooner."

Mayor Tom Barrett is expected to approve the settlement later this week, spokeswoman Jodie Tabak said.
