Frustration over recall Walker signatures causing problems
MEQUON- People collecting signatures to recall Governor Walker are out in force, but frustration between both sides is causing problems.
With less than 30 days to go before the deadline to collect recall signatures one thing both sides can agree on is that it's getting down right nasty and dangerous out on the streets.
Dave Hakman was holding a recall Walker sign when a supporter of Governor Scott Walker wanted to give him a piece of his mind last Saturday afternoon at the Mequon Library.
Hakman told TODAY'S TMJ4, "I was definitely scared, I've never been in a fight in my life".
Meanwhile, Lane Hall said he tried to step in and calm things down. But he claims the Walker supporter became physically violent.
"And he yelled very aggressively and violently I'm going to kill that blankity, blank, blank," said Hall. "out of nowhere he just kind of ducked down and did a football move and ran as fast as he could at me knocked me down, grabbed my camera from my hand and took the camera went to the street and whipped it down."
Hall's camera was destroyed and his winter jacket ripped. Mequon police arrived and arrested the man.
That isn't the only report of an attack. Back in November, a mother filed a complaint with the GAB saying she picked up her kids at the ice rink and when she tried to go across the street to get them McDonald's she was blocked in by people who were trying to get petitions signed to recall Gov. Walker. When she refused to sign she claims they gave her the middle finger and smashed a egg on the hood of her car.
Don Taylor, the chairman of the Waukesha County Republican Party told TODAY'S TMJ4, "we deplore any kind of violence going on."
Taylor is urging both sides to stay calm and professional, saying, "There are very strong passions on both sides of this issue. I can understand why some people might lose it a bit on either side of the issue but we don't condone it."
Mequon police say they are looking into the incident from last Saturday, but add the police report from the attack is not yet ready.
