Court today for Homestead High School sex assault suspects
PORT WASHINGTON - The suspects in the sexual assault case at Homestead High School have been scheduled to appear in a Port Washington courtroom on Tuesday.
Those court appearances come as new questions have arisen about the case itself.
Mequon Police planned to meet with the 14-year-old victim Monday, only, she, her father and attorney didn't show up and, it's not the first meeting they've missed and the victim's attorney tells TODAY'S TMJ4 -- there's good reason.
They wouldd normally be in class, but instead on Tuesday, Homestead High School Seniors Brent Anderson and DeAngelo Dantzler will be in court.
Both young men are charged with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl, the girl initially told police she agreed to sex acts.
She later told her father a different story, which he shared with us.
"My daughter was a victim. She was raped and wasn't a willing participant," said the girl's father.
The dad claims he told school administrators right away, but Homestead officials tell TODAY'S TMJ4 they didn't know about the sexual assault allegations until after that interview aired, on November 30th.
Nearly two weeks later, the victim and her attorney still haven't talked with authorities, despite multiple attempts. In fact, they missed a scheduled interview with police Monday morning.
The victim's attorney, Verona Swanigan told TODAY'S TMJ4, "I was not feeling well today (Monday) which was the main reason we weren't showing up," said Swanigan.
But the victim's attorney, Verona Swanigan, tells TODAY'S TMJ4 there's another reason. She claims police told her no one could be with the victim during questioning which made her client uncomfortable.
TODAY'S TMJ4 spoke with the attorney late on Monday and were unable to confirm with police what their standard procedure is for questioning victims.
In an email earlier on Monday, the Mequon police chief did tell TODAY'S TMJ4, "we will continue to seek an interview to see if there is new information to pass on to the da. If not, the statements she first provided us will stand."
