Whitefish Bay school reports confirmed case of whooping cough
WHITEFISH BAY - An 8th grade student at St. Monica School in Whitefish Bay has a confirmed case of whooping cough, the North Shore Health Department said Friday.
"Rest assured that we are doing all we can at our school to keep on top of the situation," the school said in a news release. "Right now the best you can do is to be aware of the symptoms of this and other communicable diseases, and keep your children home when they are sick and until they are fully recovered."
Whooping cough is a bacterial disease that affects the respiratory tract and is most often spread through coughing.
North Shore health officer Jamie Berg tells TODAY'S TMJ4 the school only has one confirmed case but it's not the first this fall, saying "in the north shore communities, we had two cases in November, and we have one now."
Berg says most kids in the area have their vaccinations, but it's crucial to be cautious.
"It's an issue that won't go away," said Berg.
Health officials across southeast Wisconsin have reported an increase in cases this year.
