MILWAUKEE- Ads are going up around Milwaukee comparing co-sleeping to sleeping with a butcher knife. Is it over the top?

The images are no doubt graphic, the ads read "your baby sleeping with you can be just as dangerous."

Some argue the campaign goes too far while others say it's exactly the kind of thing that will make the message stick. One thing is for sure, it's got people talking.

Mayor Tom Barrett told TODAY'S TMJ4, "We want people to think about this. We want to raise the level of discourse on this issue."

The campaign is so controversial, it's getting national attention on air and online.

The topic made The Today Show Wednesday morning and there's a facebook page dedicated to a
"campaign against the campaign."

A woman from Arizona has even started a petition to ban the ads.

Corey Planer is a mother and parenting blogger. She's heard about the tragic cases in Milwaukee where parents were under the influence at the time. She still thinks the ads are unfair because they don't educate people about safe ways to co-sleep.

Planer told TODAY'S TMJ4, "Why not have ads about putting some thought into where you put your infant to sleep, making sure you're not incapacitated."

It's a campaign bringing heated debate and a lot of attention to the issue, and that's as good as gold, according to Andy Larsen with marketing firm Boelter + Lincoln.

Larsen told TODAY'S TMJ4, "Coming from a P.R. perspective, it's working. The ads are shocking, they're intended to be shocking."

Serve Marketing is the firm behind the campaign. The man in charge tells TODAY'S TMJ4 they wanted to be provocative and shock people.

He argues you can't get a result if you don't get people talking.
