Catching speeders at East Oklahoma Avenue in Bay View
MILWAUKEE - Every morning Michele Debrauske or her husband walk their daughter to school in Bay Vew. And every day they walk across East Oklahoma Avenue near South Pennsylvania Avenue.
"We had multiple close calls," said Debrauske.
And when she says close, she means it.
"I've been in the intersection and people have not slowed down. We have been literally in the middle of the road and they just keep coming," she said.
For years, the crosswalk at Oklahoma and Pennsylvania sat empty, but after months of fighting parents finally got a crossing guard here.
The morning the Speedbusters showed up was the first day this crossing guard was on the job. And while it makes this intersection safer, it doesn't necessarily slow drivers down when people aren't crossing.
"42," shouted reporter Jay Olstad.
The speed limit is 30 miles per hour, but Olstad caught this driver going 12 over, even higher if you factor in the school zone limit, which is 20 miles per hour.
The next driver was going 46 miles per hour, but the school zone had ended.
"They're in a hurry, they're on their cell phones. Slow down, it is a school crossing," she said. "That's our fear, someone is going to get hit."
