Shipworker found dead on Kinnickinnic River
MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee Police Department is investigating after a 60-year-old man working on a ship in the Kinnickinnic River was found dead Saturday night.
Less than three hours after the St. Mary's Challenger arrived in in Milwaukee Saturday night, it became the focus of an investigation. Police received a call at about 10 p.m. and we were notified of an industrial accident on a large barge.
A report says Robert Hackensmith of Superior got his arm caught in a running conveyor belt and was severely injured before it was shut off by other workers. He died at the scene.
It happened as the ship's crew unload cement at the St. Mary's Cement Company along the Kinnickinnic River.
"I can't get into the details of the accident, but I can tell you that he was working with some machinery, a conveyor belt in particular and had an accident that caused his death," said Milwaukee Police Deputy Inspector William Jessup.
News of the accident rattled the man's co-workers.
"Not only did we live together, we shipped gether, so not only did we lose a ship member, I lost a brother," Charles Reynolds said. "He was a hardorking man, supporting his family, not robbing, not stealing, but working hard every day and unfortunately he passed away."
The death remains under investigation.
