A bad credit score can keep you from getting a loan, a job, or even the best insurance rates.

What can you do to repair your credit if you have gotten into trouble?  Where do people begin to repair their credit?

Most importantly, you need to get a handle on what you owe, and what you are willing to do to get back on track.

Some people are able to work on their own with creditors, establish a budget, and then stick to it, but others need to consider getting help from a professional.

How do you know where or who to go to for help?

There are a number of good, reputable resources, but it might be a good idea to start with a professional who is local and is willing to work with you in person, for free or at a very nominal charge.

Credit unions, housing authorities, employee assistance programs, and your county extension office can often be a good start in finding someone who can help or refer you to a reputable source such as a non-profit consumer counseling service.

What do you do if it seems like you will never be able to pay back everything that you owe?

Try to negotiate the balance with your creditors before you end up in collection or further trouble.

If it is a medical bill, you may be able to apply for special funds through the Facilities Charity Fund.

Depending upon the severity of your situation, you may also need to seek legal advice.
