Badger State Games to end after 25 years
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The Badger State Games are coming to an end after 25 years of amateur athletic events.
The games' organizer, the Wisconsin Sports Development Corporation, says retaining sponsorships is difficult in this economic climate and that participation in the games has dropped significantly over the years because of a growth in organized athletics.
The Madison-based corporation estimates 350,000 athletes participated in the games over the years, from ages 3 to 85. It says the host communities and venues enjoyed an economic benefit of more than $85 million.
The Wausau area and Fox Cities convention and visitors bureaus plan to work with local groups to continue some of the events.
