Madison School Board Member Takes Back Teacher Gift Card Idea
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A Madison School Board member is withdrawing his proposal to use $1.3 million in docked teacher pay to give workers $200 year-end bonuses.
Board member Ed Hughes tells the Wisconsin State Journal (http://bit.ly/lMiNMa ) that his proposal stirred up a "hornet's nest of resentment" in the community.
He says he will continue to look at ways to recognize teachers' hard work but the board doesn't need such distractions.
The $1.05 million proposal called for giving $200 Dane Buy Local gift cards to more than 4,000 teachers and other employees, and another $60 to cover taxes, as a year-end bonus.
The district closed school for four days in February because two-thirds of teachers called in sick to attend protests over Gov. Scott Walker's proposed changes to public sector collective bargaining.
