Recall Effort Falls Short for Republican Lawmaker
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A Democratic effort to recall a Wisconsin GOP senator will fall short of its signature goal. Organizers for the committee to recall Sen. Glenn Grothman of West Bend say in a statement that they collected only 15,000 signatures by the Monday deadline. Organizers needed at least 20,000 valid signatures to trigger a recall election. Another recall petition targeting Sen. Mary Lazich of New Berlin is also due Monday. Both recall efforts were seen as long shots in heavy Republican districts. Six Republican and three Democratic senators are in line for recalls for their support or opposition to curtailing collective bargaining rights for public employees. Efforts to recall four other Democrats failed last week. If petitions are certified, most recall elections would likely be held July 12. (Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press.
