Threatening Statements Made Against Governor Walker And Republicans
MADISON-Threats have been made against some of Wisconsin's top politicians, including Governor Walker.
It comes just days after the tragedy in Arizona.
TODAY'S TMJ4 reporter Charles Benson learned there were no direct threats made against Governor Walker and five other Republican politicians. The threats were made on a website and caught the attention of the FBI, Capitol Police and local law enforcement agencies.
A source familiar with the investigation says the threatening statements were posted on Craigslist by someone trying to blame conservatives for the shootings in Arizona that critically injured Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.
Named in the post were: Governor Scott Walker and Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch.
Her husband, State Representative Joel Kleefisch, could not comment on the investigation but says his family is well aware of the risks of living in the public eye.
"We have been cognizant of our public safety and still are to the highest level that we can be, said Kleefisch." "That's why we have a home security system and I protect my house with a gun."
State Senators Leah Vukmir and Alberta Darling were also named in the post.
All Senators have been told to be vigilant about their safety.
Thursday, Darling and Vukmir kept a normal schedule at the state capitol in Madison. Vukmir said she was not going to be deterred from keeping her normal schedule. "Well obviously there are going to be things that are done differently but I'm not at liberty to say what they are because that would defeat the whole purpose," Vukmir said. "But we are going to continue to do the best that we can and do the work of the people."
We also learned that Senator Ron Johnson and Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner were named in the post.
Sensenbrenner continued with his town hall meetings last weekend after the Arizona shootings but with law enforcement present.
Senator Ron Johnson issued this statement: The FBI, Winnebago County Sheriff's Department, Oshkosh Police Department, and United States Capitol Police are working diligently to investigate this matter.
"I have complete confidence that they will do their jobs to the fullest extent."
Governor Scott Walker kept his normal schedule and security detail on Thursday, according to a spokesman. Walker visited a business in DePere as part of a day-long trip. "There's a significant presence both for me and the Lt. Governor, and other elected officials and that will continue," Walker said. "But we're not going to let that get in the way of meeting with people across the state."
