MILWAUKEE - A new report has singled out a neighborhood near Bay View as the safest in the city of Milwaukee. The report is based on crime statistics and the likelihood of residents being a victim of crime.

Consumer website WalletPop took a look at FBI crime statistics and found that the safest neighborhood in Milwaukee is the Fernwood area bordered by Oklahoma to the north, Morgan to the south, Lake Parkway to the west, and Lake Michigan to the east.

“It’s just a nice, family-friendly area. I know my kids who don’t live in the city sometimes wonder, “Ooh, is it safe?” Yeah, it is,” said resident Laurie Petersen.

Neighbors speculate that the community is safe because so many of the residents have lived there for a long time, and it’s somewhat out of the way and less likely to be visited by outsiders.

“Everybody kind of watches out for each other. There’s always somebody out, and if something doesn’t look right, they’ll question it or they’ll get involved,” said longtime resident Tony Ullenberg.

In the report, FBI crime statistics showed that the Bay View neighborhood is safer than 80% of neighborhood in the country. The chances of a resident being a victim of a crime in one year (ranging from property crimes to violent crimes) is 1 in 147.
