No Charges in August Whitefish Bay Sewage Backups
WHITEFISH BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Police in Whitefish Bay say they have identified the people who removed a manhole cover during an August rainstorm, which village officials say caused sewer backups in a dozen homes.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that police sent the case to the district attorney's office, but prosecutors have declined to file charges because there was apparently no intent to cause damage.
The department says in a news release Saturday that the case remains under investigation. Police also did not reveal how many suspects they had identified or provide their names.
While village officials have blamed the removal of the manhole cover for the sewer backups, some residents are skeptical. They say officials are blaming residents instead of taking responsibility for it themselves.
