MILWAUKEE - The trial starts Monday for a man charged with killing a 6-month-old girl by putting her under a mattress.

Dekia Mattox was found stuffed under the mattress inside her home in Milwaukee late last year by relatives.  Her 15-year-old mother had been out along with her aunt.

The only person in the home was Darius Woodley, a homeless family acquaintance who, according to investigators, spent the day smoking marijuana laced with crack, snorting heroin and drinking beer.

A criminal complaint states Woodley told responding officers to put the cuffs on him and put him in the squad because "Something happened to the baby."

Woodley is charged with first-degree reckless homicide and faces up to 60 years in prison.

Family's Home was in Poor Condition

The family and the home, near Richards and Center, had been the subject of an ongoing investigation by the Bureau of Milwaukee Child Welfare.

According to the Journal Sentinel, which details a report on the home.  "The temperature on the main floor was 40 degrees. Knives were found on the floor of nearly every room. The bathroom contained a leaking toilet and a broken sink. Dirty dishes filled the kitchen sink. Investigators found empty liquor bottles and beer cans, piles of dirty clothes, discarded baby bottles and little food."
