Possible Petting Zoo E. coli

WAUWATOSA - An 18-month-old girl is recovering from E. coli at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin.  Health officials suspect she became infected at a petting zoo at the Fond du Lac County Fair in July.

Children's Hospital said the girl was in "fair" condition Monday morning.  She is Alexis Kottke of Lomira.

"We have reason to believe that it occurred at a petting farm that the child went to with her parents," said Jody Langfeldt of the Dodge County Health Department.

And that raises a reminder for anyone who takes their kids to a petting zoo -- to wash every child's hands after they touch animals.

The Fond du Lac County Fair manager said they did have hand washing stations and signs to remind people.

Fortunately, Fond du Lac County's Health Department said no other E. coli cases have turned up connected to the fair.

Langfeldt said the case is a reminder for parents to wash their child's hands after visiting a petting zoo.

"There's all these cute, cuddly, little animals that they want to play with. I think parents just really need to do their best to try and keep hands as clean as possible," Langfeldt explained.

The health department also says using hand sanitizer might help.
