Heat Advisory Now in Effect

  • Print

MILWAUKEE - A heat advisory has been given for Dodge, Fond Du Lac, Walworth and Jefferson Counties, which means the heat index for those areas is expected to reach more than 100 degrees.

But according to Storm Team 4Caster Craig Koplien, the heat in Southeastern Wisconsin won't be exclusive to those two counties.

"Heat advisory or not, it's going to be real hot everywhere," said Koplien.

"It's just not going to hit that magical threshold of 100 degrees.  The heat index is still going to be in the upper 90's."

Koplien explains that the heat index is higher than just the temperature you see on your gauge outside.

"That means that the heat index, the 'feel like' temperature when you combine the heat and the humidity, will be around 100 degrees this afternoon," said Koplien.

The last few days also show that Wisconsin has experienced the heat and humidity for a long period of time this summer - including this week - but it's just going to be a bit warmer than the norm.

"It's not necessarily going to be all that much more hot than it's been the last couple of days, but it'll be a little bit hotter.  The last couple the days, the highs have been in the upper 80's, pushing 90.  Today, it looks like everybody will hit 90."

This kind of heat, though, brings warnings of danger to those that aren't watchful of how they're handling it, or to kids or the elderly.

"It's the kind of weather that, as it's been persistent all week long, that is potentially dangerous to folks who don't pay particular attention to being outdoors, observing themselves," said Koplien.

When does relief come?

"A humidity-busting cold front is scheduled to come through late in the day on Saturday.  We've got another hot and humid one tomorrow, and Saturday is going to be very similar.  Sunday, we're finally going to get relief."

But not before storms might come through on Friday.

"There's nothing in the forecast until tomorrow night.  At that point, there could be some heavy storms."

Staying Cool In The Pool

There is a good chance that pools and beaches will be packed today as people attempt to beat the heat.

Many at the Wisconsin State Fair on Wednesday used fans and spritzers to stay cool.

Most Milwaukee County beaches are showing good water quality and safety for those who want to beat the heat by hitting the water.

The few exceptions are Atwater Beach, which is closed due to an unsafe bluff, and Grant Park and South Shore Beaches, where health officials are asking people to use caution.

Other people in Milwaukee County can use the County Pools, with some like the David Schulz Aquatic Center at Lincoln Park and Cool Waters at Greenfield Park having hours until 8:00 p.m.

Other suggestions that are typically given to keep cool include taking frequent showers or baths in cool water, avoiding caffeine and alcohol and - most importantly - drinking lots of water.
