Back by popular demand, the China Lights lantern festival opened Friday night at the Boerner Botanical Gardens.

Many people welcoming the cooler temperatures, that helped keep the mosquitoes at bay.

Visitors walked through nearly a mile of pathway that featured 41 colorful lantern displays. This year's theme: Panda-Mania.

"I like going through the pandas, the bamboo area," said Austin Nye, from West Allis.

The festival celebrates Asian folk-culture with entertainment, a marketplace and a variety of food from local vendors.

The displays only get brighter the darker it gets.

"It’s gorgeous," said Sheila Veksler from Bayside.

China Lights runs from September 21 to October 21. It's open Tuesday through Sunday from 5:30 to 10 p.m.
