4 Your Health: Healthy Food Awards

By Susan Kim

With more than 47,000 options, it can be tough to choose healthy, tasty options. So Self magazine pared down the list!

For most of us, it's a weekly tradition: Racing up and down the grocery aisles in search of the healthiest, tastiest food. Erin Hobday works for Self Magazine. She says, "What you stock your kitchen with is ultimately what's going to help you achieve body and diet success."

But it's tough to know what to toss in your cart. So Dietitian Willow Jarosh came up with a checklist. "We looked at calories, the total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, protein, sodium, added sugar. We also looked at the food ingredients."

Volunteers were recruited to taste-test everything from snacks to desserts.

Looking to kick-start your morning? The winning cereal scored for its taste and fiber fix. 'Van's Waffles' are low fat and packed with whole grains.

"Readers really loved them. They thought that they were toasty and crisp on the outside, but warm and soft on the inside," Hobday says.

To start a sandwich for lunch, Pepperidge Farm's winning bread was declared soft, chewy and it meets whole grain and fiber requirements. It has a whole grain as the first ingredient.

For dinner, dress your greens with a winning salad dressing. Or, dine on a frozen favorite: Choose a meat, veggie or seafood meal.

"What we looked for in frozen meals was to make sure that they had enough calories, without going overboard on things like saturated fat and sodium," Jarosh says.

For dessert--Kashi's dark chocolate coconut bars scored high with testers. Tester Rebecca Collins is a fan. "The chocolate was really fudgy and wonderful, and the granola was tasty, but it was also really filling as well," she describes.

It all comes down to good taste, and good nutrition. If your grocery store doesn't carry what you're looking for don't despair. Ask the manager if it can be ordered and added to store shelves.

We sorted through hundreds of foods, so we tasted over 400 products and we ended up with 54 winners," Hobday says.
