4 Your Health4 Your Health: Block Signs of AgingBy Courtny GerrishNew sunblock products are turning up the heat a bit, making claims to not just screen out the sun, but also block signs of aging. Gia Alexi-Tomari wants to look her best, and wonders whether her age is starting to show. "I worry quite a bit about wrinkles and getting older," she complains. Gia uses a sunscreen that says it has special anti-aging ingredients, and says she sees a visible difference. "The skin tone is much smoother and the texture is a lot firmer," she explains. Dermatologist Dina Anderson points out that all sunblocks have anti-aging qualities. "Sunscreens do what they say, they block the sun. So, sun is directly related to brown spots, wrinkles, rough text, losing your glow, so sunscreen are directly anti-aging," she says. But now, new products are promising even more--with added ingredients like retinol, peptides and plant extracts to fight wrinkles and stimulate collagen production. "We're talking about adding a primarily anti-oxidant, or a skin protein maybe from a fetal skin cell, added to the sun block, which also counteracts free radical formation, which also causes aging," Dr. Anderson explains. It's the free radical formation that causes the wrinkles and the uneven skin tone that so many of us are trying to avoid. Dr. Anderson says studies show some of the ingredients may live up to the claims, but do your homework before you pay for new protection. "Look for some scientific backing instead of just a commercial claim, you might want to do some investigating on the internet into some of the research that has been done," Dr. Anderson warns. And even then, you have to be careful about what you cover and how often. You need to reapply them at least every 2-3 hours, and even more frequently if you're going to be in the water. Gia puts on her sunscreen first thing, and re-applies a couple hours into the day. "I don't typically spend much time out in the sun, but I understand just walking the city street you can get quite a bit of exposure," she says. Some of the sunscreens with anti-aging claims can be more expensive than their traditional counterparts, but you don't have to buy the most expensive cream on the market to get the most bang for your buck.
