Think you're stressed? Look in the mirror! Turns out, your skin reflects what's going on in your life.
So what can you do?
We talked with Laura Sheehy. She works hard to keep her finances out of the red, but the stress made her skin go red instead.
"You get overwhelmed with the big picture today," she told us.
That's certainly true. Economic stress made her rosacea flare up.
Dr. Amy Wechsler, a dermatologist who wrote "The Mind-Beauty Connection," said that's becoming more common. She told us stress is a leading cause of breakouts. Turns out, it has to do with hormones.
"When someone is stressed, their levels of cortisol, which is the major stress hormone, goes sky-high. And cortisol breaks down collagen and causes inflammation," Wechsler explained.
That can lead to common breakouts like psoriasis, adult acne, and rosacea.
Premature aging can also be a result. Collagen breaks down, resulting in fine lines and wrinkles.
Dr. Wechsler said she can see from her patient load, how stressed people are.
"People are coming in and saying, 'I did not have this wrinkle last month' or, 'this is my, you know, my post market-crashing wrinkle,' " she shared.
So what can you do to look your best while under stress?
We asked Dr. Debra Luftman, a dermatologist and the author of "The Beauty Prescription." She told us there are a slew of effective lotions and potions available right at the drugstore.
"I tell my patients- keep it simple. You only need three to four products," she told us.
Start with a soothing cleanser. Dr. Luftman suggests Cetaphil, to help calm dry, irritated skin. Gly Derm cleanser exfoliates to remove dead skin cells.
If you're planning on spending time in the sun, she said, "Banana Boat Sun Wear faces oil free SPF 30 covers the UVA and UVB rays and is oil-free, so it won't break you out."
And if a pimple pops up…she recommends grabbing the Therapeutix Emergency Outbreak Stick, which Dr. Luftman developed herself. "It's a treatment for acne on the go," she explained. "It reduces pimples within two hours."
Doctor Wechsler also recommends getting outside for exercise. "When we're exercising, we make more beta endorphins and those are anti-inflammatory."
Laura has been soothing her inflamed skin with over the counter products, which she said helps keep her skin clear, even when the economic forecast isn't.
