4 Your Health: Bikram Yoga

MILWAUKEE - A new fitness class in town is getting folks all hot and bothered.

Bikram Yoga is on Commerce Street, in Milwaukee's 'Beerline' neighborhood.

The neighborhood is known for Lakefront Brewery.

But look down the road and you go from beer to Bikram!

The 'Bikram' method started in India decades ago, and combines 26 postures and two breathing exercises.

Chicago native Bron Gacki opened the studio about 2 months ago. He describes Bikram as a full-body workout. "It works every single muscle, tissue, organ--every gland in your body, everything gets worked," he explains.

Sound tiring? Try doing it in a room heated to 105-degrees and 45-percent humidity.

There is some debate among doctors about the safety of performing yoga in extreme heat, but Gacki claims the heat actually makes the movements safer.

"It's good for detoxification, you get all of that junk out of your body. Secondly, with the heat, it's a safer environment to do these postures in. There's less chance of injury with your muscles," Gacki says.

That's a good thing, with difficult postures including the lotus.

Sarah Rock tried Bikram for the first time a couple weeks ago. Now she's a regular.

She exclaims, "I'm just, I'm loving it. I can't seem to get enough!"

With two young boys at home, she admits it's a nice release.

"You come back with energy to deal with the day," Sarah says.

It's not just for the ladies.

Lawyer Jim Tessier started Bikram years ago when he lived in California.

He jokes, "I started becausemy girlfriend challenged me, kinda teased me into it. Well, the yoga lasted a lot longer than she did!"

Gacki tries to keep the 90 minutes both fast-paced and relaxing, so students come back for more.

"It's just a simple, easy way to improve your life. Come in, do your 26 postures, grab a drink of water afterwards, then you're good," he says.

Gacki's studio is the only one in the area certified to teach just Bikram.

There are other studios offering Bikram classes. Yoga classes do typically cost more than a regular gym membership. Most yoga plans in the area cost around $100 a month.
