Five members of the same family share something very special. One surgeon changed all their lives.
The Pietrangelo family's rare and wonderful story started painfully.
Pamelt Pietrangelo started having headaches, slurred speech, and numbness. "In fact, there was one time when we were at the store and Jim had to catch me because I was going to fall down," she told us.
Pamela was baffled. So she went to see Dr. Max Lee, a neurosurgeon at Columbia St. Mary's Hospital in Milwaukee. Dr. Lee diagnosed her with a cyst on the brain. Then he performed the delicate surgery that saved her life.
"Without him I don't think I'd be here right now," Pam believes.
She was so thrilled with the results that she didn't hesitate to recommend Dr. Lee to her uncle Anthony for spinal surgery. "I mean if I had to recommend a neurosurgeon to anybody I always tell everybody I've got your guy."
Uncle Anthony's surgery was a success. "It worked out real well, actually."
So he gave the nod for Dr. Lee to operate on his sister-in-law Marianne for her arthritis. Another success.
"I think he's just wonderful, he is just wonderful. He has just such a caring way about him," Marianne raved.
Up next, Marianne's nephew Lamont Hanko, who, too, was having back pain.
Lamont feels better now. "After I had the surgery, I couldn't believe the difference I felt. I had a full back fusion."
The final patient on the table was Marianne's husband Michael, whose surgery was to relieve nerve pain in his back.
Dr. Lee was able to help him overcome the problem as well.
And now whenever the Pietrangelos get together, they talk about how one doctor, changed their lives. In fact, theyr'e so grateful, they're planning on having the doctor over to their next family gathering.
Dr. Lee says he tried alternative treatments for each member of the family, and that surgery was the last option in all of their cases. The prognosis for all of the Pietrangelos is great.
